I was going back and forth on a few but ended up really
getting into the National Museum of the American Indian. My voice is Anton Treuer and he is really big
on education. Not only is he a
professor, he holds many degrees, and is a speaker. What I found interesting was I was watching a
documentary on our author and from what the National Museum has such as was to
learn about the Native American culture and history but I love the fact that there
are workshops. Which means teachers now
cant continue with the Christopher Columbus story and the first thanksgiving
and the pilgrims. Now there are other
resources to help the children now understand Native Americans because from
what the documentary I watched that’s the biggest problem today is we don’t know
their history and traditions and they do not know ours and that’s been going on
for a quite a bit of time. Also this museum
kind of relates to some of what the Museum is in Albany, NY they primarily
focus on one tribe but have an great display as well as different things to motivate
a child and help a teacher express more.
I think it is great that there are places choosing to discuss the real history of Native Americans. I have learned a great deal from this class and I am choosing to keep all of the text books that we had to purchase. For one, I think it is great to add to my personal library. I usually just sell the textbooks back or rent them but I didn't in this case. I like adding books to my home that are interesting to look back on and learn something from. Secondly, I have an 8 year old step daughter and 2 year old daughter and I want to keep these books around so they can learn the truth about what happened. I know that the school will not teach them everything and many things will be sugar coated as they have been. Having these books around will give them a plethora of information that they will not otherwise be exposed to. I think that it is important that everyone knows the truth. There are a lot of cultural hardships in America today and I keep thinking to myself, "everyone feels so wrong and things aren't fair but what about the Natives of this land, this country took more from them than anyone combined". It's a personal thought that keeps running through my head since we started this class.
